CunninLynguists - Dirty Acres

There has never been an anomaly in hip hop quite like the southern rap trio Cunninlynguists. Sampling genres from psych-rock to blues, New Romantic to polka, they have been musically compared to UGK and Atmosphere in the same breath. They have toured and shared stages with Kanye West and Aesop Rock to equal success. They have produced for Lil' Scrappy as well as KRS-One. They have crafted songs with international soul superstar Cee-Lo Green and politically charged indie-favorite Immortal Technique on the same album.

Cunninlynguists have eschewed categories, boxes and labels for 6 years, 3 albums, and 2 official mixtapes. The result? If you want labels… Southern Boom Bap. Too white for BET, too black for MTV2. A preacher's son, a Caucasian guy from rural Georgia, and a convicted felon. But mainly, a self-made career, one of the most consistent catalogs of any current hip hop act and one of the most loyal , worldwide fanbases in all of indie-rap music. Backed with gritty beats, quality rhymes, and 808 thump, the 'Lynguists intend on recapturing the soul in Southern hip hop, painting a picture meant to remind the world that politics, death, racism, relationships, religion, and struggle are just as relevant to life below the Mason-Dixon line as anywhere else.

Keep an eye out for a solo album by producer Kno, called "Knomercy"... another classic in the making!

CunninLynguists - A Piece Of Strange

Cunninlynguists first dropped "Will Rap for Food" to little fanfare. Unless you're from Kentucky, Cunninlynguists probably wasn't on your radar at that point. That album, over time, really started to generate a fan base. DJ Kno really came thru with the production and Deacon just has that infatuating southern drawl to his flow. That album was thankfully reissued this year for all those who slept the first time around. Kno and Deacon went on to drop their sophomore album "Southernunderground" on Fresh Chest Records to solid reviews. God, they should have flowed on that "War" beat. Cunninlynguists now comes at you with the all-new studio album "A Piece of Strange" after doing the solo thing with Mr. SOS and dropping a few mix tapes in between. You might have heard "Caved In" with Cee-lo as it was available in honor of Katrina Victims. These guys just keep getting better, with DJ Kno set to drop a full length production album pretty soon they show no signs of slowing down either.

Another standout album from the Lynguists. Very different from their first two as this has a lot more deeper lyrics and is basically a concept album. Do not sleep, nice cover too!!

CunninLynguists - Southernunderground

Immediately after the success of their debut album, Will Rap For Food, CunninLynguists added a new member in, Mr. SOS, to balance out the Emceeing duties on the record, in order for Kno to focus on production. The result was Southernunderground, an instant classic that was amazingly recorded in just under 2 weeks.

Upon its release, long-standing music mags such as SPIN Magazine gave Southernunderground a well deserved A- in their review, while The Source magazine featured them in their 'OFF THE RADAR' column. Feautured as one of URB Magazine's 'NEXT 100', nearly every reviewer, site and trade publication sung its praises. Still, what was most impressive about this sophomore album wasn't the plethora of favorable reviews - but the incredible amount of artistic growth shown over their already excellent debut, WRFF. Southernunderground exemplified the utmost level of lyrical and musical sophistication possible on an album. Already sounding like seasoned veterans along side Masta Ace on the RJD2-produced leadoff 12" single, "Seasons (feat. Masta Ace)", SU served as a true testament to their staying power and capability.

Songs like the anthemic "The South," push your wig back while the tributary "Appreciation (feat. Cashmere The PRO)," melt in your mind and resonate with poignancy. From the genre-flipping, drum & bass tale of insanity that is "Falling Down," to the cathartic examination of a love slowy dying on "Rain," the CunninLynguists hit so many thematic angles it will leave your head spinning.

With Deacon & SOS allowed to focus on the MC duties, they freely tackle an incredibly diverse range of topics - from hip-hop history to modern politics. Left to his craft, Kno makes immeasurable imrpovements over his first production effort. With his motto: "My interludes will son your 12" beat," he set forth to cement his place among the elite crop of new producers. And succeed he did.

Southernunderground is a MUST-HAVE for any hip-hop fan, and is THE best hip-hop album of 2003 bar none.

CunninLynguists - Will Rap For Food

CunninLynguists entire catalogue is a must have not only for rap heads, but for all true music fans. As a rap head that grew up in the early and mid 90s when rap was innovative in expressing deep thought and the feelings of a generation, CunninLynguists are a breath of fresh air in a depressingly stale genre (mainstream). Everything they put out is intricately constructed with an attention to detail in lyrics, production, and flow. You can bang the albums straight through without any real skips.

Kno does all the production for CunninLynguists and he really sets the tone for all the albums with top notch and versatile production. Like all great rap and production combinations (Guru and Premier, Stoupe and Vinnie Paz, Talib and Hi-Tek) CunninLynguists lyrics and production mesh seamlessly to create true bangers. The production enhances the lyrics and vice versa to build songs that you feel more the more you listen to them. Please STOP SLEEPIN' on these guys and cop this and all their other classics. You will not be disappointed...

This is without doubt one of the best hip hop remix albums ever, period!!!! Kno is truly on inspirational form as he lays down his sick beats over the Black Album acapellas, he also changes the track listing around so each track compliments the next. 9th Wonder remixed the Black Album, so did Danger Mouse & Kev Brown but Kno's version is definitely the best of the lot, don't sleep!

Southern Fried Strange Journey

There are only 72 hours left for fans of soulful southern Hip Hop to support one of the genre’s most impressive acts. As of next Monday (March 23rd), advance sales of the Kentucky/Georgia trio CunninLynguists’ latest offering, Strange Journey Volume One, will stop being offered as the group prepares to depart for a European tour beginning April 2nd.

"
I hate to call it a mixtape – that term has been cheapened," said Kno of Strange Journey. "And it’s all original stuff… We’re not rappin’ over ‘This Is Why I’m Hot’ two years later. It’s not that… I don’t even really pitch to people that don’t wanna listen to our music [why they should buy it], ‘cause they’re gonna download it for free anyway. So I fully invite them to download it for free. Anybody who wants to hear it, I want them to download it. It’s all good. But as far as [a] sales pitch [for] the people who really wanna support CunninLynguists monetarily and the people who enjoy our music, it’s mad cheap and I stand by everything that’s on it. It’s real good music… And I think people when they’re broke, and they’re worried about their job, they need good music to pick ‘em up."

Recession-priced at $12 (which includes shipping costs), those that place their advance order by Monday will receive for their dozen dollars an autographed copy of
SJV1, bonus album instrumentals, and have all in hand several weeks before the official retail release of the CD on May 26th. Appearances on the album come from the group’s QN5 fam (Tonedeff, Substantial, PackFM), as well as Slug of Atmosphere, who surfaces for the lament on being away from home during long tour trips, “Don’t Leave (When Winter Comes)”. Former group member Mr. SOS is also back in the CunninLynguists mix for Strange Journey.

He recorded a solo track,” Kno noted. “This track [“Die For You”] is entirely him, three verses. I mean, we never really stopped working with SOS. It’s just a matter of him getting material out. He has a lot of stuff just kinda sitting on the shelf waiting to be released.”

Although their outside-the-group production plate is apparently always full,
Kno and Deacon continue to keep the focus, along with Natti, on CunninLynguists’ music. The trio are already planning to unleash the second installment of Strange Journey in September to coincide with the group’s North American tour.

A grimier counterpart to its predecessor,
Strange Journey Volume Two assembles an assortment of underground Hip Hop luminaries, including Sean Price and Poison Pen (who appear on the concept record about how no matter your locale you can get attacked and jacked, “Streets”), J-Zone, Bronze Nazareth, Guilty Simpson, and many more.

And after the two volumes of
Strange Journey have reached the satisfied masses, CunninLynguists will unveil two more offerings for fans of that southern fried soulness.

We’re working on an EP, and we’re working on a new studio album,” Kno revealed of the group’s planned 2010 releases. “We don’t have a title [for either] yet. But both of the records are concept records, and they kinda run into each other…We never stop working. This is a recession, [and] you’re gonna get fired if you stop.

Strange Journey Volume One is due May 26 from Bad Taste Records.
