The Day Laborers - The Learning Process

MySpace

Joining the lineage of other prolific Long Island hip hop pioneers such as Rakim, EPMD, De La Soul and Public Enemy. Lyricists I.N.F. and Aspect are collectively known as The Day Laborers. A duo who have spent years building a buzz the old fashioned way. Defining themselves on stage performing at venues all over New York City. Most notably a series of highly successful shows at the lengendary CBGB's at a time when the venue had not opened it's doors to hip hop for years until The Day Laborers arrived on the scene. Following momentum from those shows they released The Red Sky EP, then entered the studio intent on crafting an album that encompasses the best of what underground boom bap and raw rap has to offer with a refreshing style accessible to mainstream appeal. Their agile flow displays a smooth delivery interweaving intricate and articulate rhyme schemes about introspective topics that all hard working common people can relate to. Whether you're a blue collar worker or put on a suit and tie this music is for you, the youth culture and young adults coming of age. These musicians profess "we've taken everything that was classic to us and updated that sound into songs that currently sound relevant but can still be considered just as relevant years from now. With the release of their debut album, The Learning Process, The Day Laborers are set to make their mark with music in a major way.

Louis Logic & J.J. Brown - Misery Loves Comedy

MySpace: Louis Logic
MySpace: J.J. Brown

Louis Logic debuted with 2003's Sin-A-Matic, an underground hit that introduced the Philadelphia rapper to a wider audience. The follow-up, Misery Loves Comedy, gives co-credit to producer J.J. Brown, a wise move because Brown's inventive, varied settings are the album's most consistently entertaining feature. Vintage old-school soul samples and jazzy minor-key instrumental themes are Brown's primary stock in trade, but the producer cleverly integrates unexpected sound effects in between without crossing over into show-offy gimmickry. (In particular, the opening of "Up to No Good," balancing Stereolab-like vintage synth washes with a deep soul guitar line and wordless male/female vocals, is simply outstanding.) Over all of this, Logic's raps tend to focus on his experiences with women, and as the title indicates, the news isn't good. However, instead of the usual bitches-and-hos misogyny, Logic gamely accepts his own shortcomings on songs like "All Girls Cheat" and "A Perfect Circle," even as other tracks feature more typical sly braggadocio along the lines of "Classy McNasty." The album's centerpiece track, "The Withdrawal Method," is the best of the bunch lyrically, a clear-eyed examination of a relationship's end that sounds like Nick Hornby could have written it. Funny, sharp, and surprisingly honest, Misery Loves Comedy is a big lyrical step up from Logic's earlier, more broadly comic records.

Louis Logic is a dope MC, also one of the original members of The Demigodz along with Apathy, Celph Titled and others. J.J. Brown is one of my favourite producers, also one of the most underrated in the game! This is another one of my "FOR THOSE THAT SLEPT" posts so... er... don't sleep!! ;)

The Odd Couple [Jay Love/Louis Logic] - Alcohol/Ism

The Odd Couple was formed. In 2001, they released “Pimp Shit” b/w “Por Qué” on Solid Records/Golden Apple Records. The record was an immediate success and spawned the notion of putting together a complete album. Due to financial stress and other delays, the album took nearly three years to complete. These unfortunate events sent Jay Love below the radar.

Louis Logic - Sin-A-Matic

MySpace

Every once in a while an emcee comes out of nowhere and releases a mind-blowing modern hip-hop classic debut album that is filled with intelligence, insanity, sharp wit, and a balance of solid beats and tight rhymes. Louis Logic has been making some minor noise in the underground circuit for some time now. His association with Apathy and The Demigodz gave him some shine but only now is he getting the recognition he deserves.

He hooked up with Solid Records and released his debut solo album “Sin-A-Matic”. Produced by J.J. Brown, Memo Of The Molemen, The Avid Record Collector and others, “Sin-A-Matic” is unlike any other hip-hop album out today while it has that classic hip-hop feel at the same time. Lyrically, Louis Logic is a wild man. While some people compare him to Eminem due to his dark humor, hard punch lines, and sharp wit, Louis Logic is truly a unique emcee. While Eminem rhymes about doing drugs, Louis Logic is an unashamed alcoholic. He can drink almost anyone under the table. His friend, Vinnie Paz from Jedi Mind Tricks dubbed him “The Dragon” or “The Drunken Dragon”. Even with tons of alcohol in his system, Louis Logic pumped out an album with songs that were both funny, poignant, intelligent, and devilishly clever. “The Ugly Truth” is a perfect example of a deliciously wicked Louis Logic track. Each verse explores the hatred of different religions, cultures, and races. Stereotypes and hateful (yet hilarious) remarks are made against Black people, gays, Asians, and more. Then, at the end of the song, the listener is shocked to hear that the narrator is actually George Bush. Many of the songs on “Sin-A-Matic” have this intense, hardcore wit.

Louis Logic finds the humor in the ugly. From freaking out on “Postal” to betrayal on “Best Friends” to retribution on “Revenge!” and sex and women on “Coochie Coup”, “Idiot Gear”, and “The Rest”, Louis Logic tackles both new and old themes in a completely fresh and exciting way. While known for his clever punch lines, Logic crafted his skill on telling exciting stories and rhyming in new and different ways. As an emcee, he is versatile, unique, and hungry. Fueled by tons of alcohol, he gets help from other emcees like Celph Titled and Apathy.

The album does have the cinematic quality where you can listen to the entire LP in one sitting. Louis Logic is more than just an emcee. He also writes for Elemental Magazine. On a hot evening in August 2003, Louis Logic and I sat down and had an in-depth conversation about alcohol, sex, women, hip-hop, racism, music business, and life in general. So, Delve into you dark side, explore your sins, crack open the beers, and let The Drunken Dragon roar.
