Dilla Days: February 5th

Continuing on with the fifth of twenty-eight days dedicated to James "J Dilla" Yancey is another pair of creations that are sure to keep your head nodding. Starting off is a track most of you are probably familiar with from the Jaylib collaboration album Champion Sound. The Talib Kweli assisted cut "Raw Shit" represents exactly what the title of the song says and is yet another example of Dilla's versatile production styles. Secondly, we have a song I don't know a lot about other than it's extreme dopeness. The song is called "I Must Love You" and for whatever reason was the only Dilla production featured on Guilty Simpson's album Ode To The Ghetto. Anyways, the beat is absolutely nuts and if you haven't heard it I would highly recommend that you take a few seconds to check it out.

Guilty Simpson - Piglets (Oh No Remix)

Oh No's Ghettodes collection is not an album, but a few tracks have been released, including this remix for the song "Pigs" which was originally produced by Madlib for the Ode To The Ghetto.

Strong Arm Steady feat. Phonte - Best Of Times (Prod. by Madlib)

As the anticipation continues for the upcoming Strong Arm Steady & Madlib album In Search of Stoney Jackson, the folks at Stones Throw decided to let out yet another leak. On the album's intro "Best Of Times", the SAS crew flows over a smooth, laid back head-nodder from Madlib and features Little Brother's Phonte singing on the hook. In Search of Stoney Jackson drops next Tuesday, January 26th, and is produced entirely by Madlib, who is a longtime friend of Phil Da Agony and extended Strong Arm Steady family. The album’s conception owes a great deal to World Famous Beat Junkie, J.Rocc, who provided the trio with close to 200 of the Madlib the Beat Konducta’s tracks to choose from.

Strong Arm Steady feat. Phonte - Best Of Times (Prod. by Madlib)

In Search of Stoney Jackson is produced entirely by Madlib, longtime friend of Phil Da Agony and extended Strong Arm Steady family. The album’s conception owes a great deal to World Famous Beat Junkie, J.Rocc, who provided the trio with close to 200 of the Madlib the Beat Konducta’s tracks to choose from. Strong Arm Steady had previously rapped over Madlib productions on the Madlib and Talib Kweli Liberation album, but this full-length marks a long-desired collaboration between the four. It’s a hip-hop jam session, with the group acting as the rhythm section for an all-star cast of guest vocalists such as Planet Asia, Guilty Simpson, Evidence, Chace Infinite, and Phonte of Little Brother. Madlib & Guilty Simpson - The Paper

Madlib is launching the Madlib Medicine Show, a once-a-month, twelve-CD, six-LP series. The Madlib Medicine Show will be a combination of Madlib's new hip-hop productions, remixes, beat tapes, and jazz, as well as mixtapes of funk, soul, Brazilian, psych, jazz and other undefined forms of music from the Beat Konducta's 4-ton (yes, it is really that much) stack of vinyl.

Madlib Medicine Show No. 1 is Before The Verdict featuring Guilty Simpson, a 17-track album mixing remixes and new material, something of a prelude to Madlib & Guilty Simpson's forthcoming OJ Simpson album.

Stoney Jackson (Strong Arm Steady x Madlib) - Get Ya Money Right

The Madlib/Strong Arm Steady collaboration album Stoney Jackson came together in a flurry of creative energy over recent months. Prompted by Madlib’s stalwart DJ J.Rocc, who supplied SAS with 14 new Madlib beats CD, this album’s conception and delivery bear resemblance to the trajectory took by 2003’s Jaylib with J Dilla and 2004’s Madvillain with DOOM.

The SAS had previously rapped over Madlib’s music on their mixtape/album Deep Hearted and on the Talib Kweli/Madlib album Liberation.

The Stoney Jackson album unfolds over sixteen tracks and is a brisk, exciting hip hop record. Krondon and Phil The Agony supply the majority of the vocals with the third SAS member Mitchy Slick; guest appearances include Talib Kweli, Guilty Simpson, Little Brother’s Phonte, Planet Asia and a host of underground Los Angeles’s emerging rap talent.

Stoney Jackson represents Madlib’s return to the hip-hop fold and sets the scene for the OJ Simpson collaboration he’s finishing with Guilty Simpson.

A Guide To Madlib's Mindfusion Series.

Madlib’s five-volume mixtape series, Mind Fusion, was released 2004-2007. These CD releases bare no label or address, just the name “Madlib” designed like the Tamla Records logo. One suspects they are outlaw. Some have suggested they were printed by an arm of the Aum Supreme Truth Cult in Japan, but no solid proof exists to support this claim.

Vols. 1 and 4 contain production from Madlib. Vol. 2 is a jazz mix. Vols. 3 and 5 are mixes of records from around the world. Each mix has a minimal or incomplete track list and a descriptive subtitle.

Liner notes in each volume, from authors such as Thurston Moore, Vaclav Havel, LeRoi Jones, and Lungston Hughes, range from essays on jazz, a Los Angeles guides, poems, tips on making bombs at home, and a biography of the Beat Konducta which is likely ficticious.

Vols. 1 and 2 appear to have been repressed because of slightly different color and logo placement between the two editions.

A detailed description of each can be found by clicking the following link: Rappcats.com
