Basement Demos: Pete & C.L.

One Leg Up Records recently announced that legendary duo Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth have some left over tracks from their Golden Era.

Recordings from the critically acclaimed and sound changing EP, All Souled Out, the predecessor to Rock & C.L.’s debut album, Mecca And The Soul Brother, have been dug up and put together on a new five track EP.

These tracks from the All Souled Out recording sessions were something of a myth, until a couple leaked onto WBLS’ "In Control" show almost 20 years ago. Now CL and DJ 4XL have hooked up to not only collect these lost tapes, but the tracks were restored to premium quality and sounds. The EP brings the sounds of the late 80’s meshing into the now famous early 90’s sound.

The limited EP, which will only be pressed for 200 copies, is titled Basement Demos. The price for history is not cheap either, as the collector’s item will set you back $80.00.

The track listing is as follows:

SIDE A:
01. "The Midnight Wrecka"
02. "Cool and Calm"

SIDE B:
01. "Go C.L."
02. "Down To Move Ya Body"
03. "Go With The Flow [Alternate Mix]"

All songs produced by Pete Rock.

Jay $tay Paid, New Album Coming In June.

Ma'Dukes and Pete Rock are set to release a posthumous project of Dilla's unreleased beats and samples, called Jay Stay Paid [J$P], late this spring.

Executive produced by Ma'Dukes, J$P will feature music pulled off of Dilla's old floppy disks and DATs, as well as later tracks laid down during Dilla’s time spent in the hospital. Ms. Yancey assures that the project was not rushed, nor was it done haphazardly.

“This album combines what he did in the beginning of his career, [and] what he did in some of our early hospital stays, which was very deep,” she explains. “This is like the missing links to Dilla's legacy.”

The format of the album plays like a radio show with Pete Rock acting as a radio DJ. While largely instrumental, J$P also features guest vocals from artists Black Thought, DOOM, and M.O.P. All are artists that Dilla worked with or admired.

“Dude was amazing,” said Pete Rock, who shared that he and Dilla held a mutual respect and high level of regard for one another. “He just kinda came out of nowhere and the more you heard his beats the better they got. He may not be with us, but it’s all good we’re going to keep his music alive and well.”

The album is scheduled for release June 2nd on the Nature Sounds record label.

Producer Spotlight: Pete Rock

Peter Phillips (born June 21, 1970 in Bronx New York), better known by his stage name Pete Rock, is an American DJ/Record Producer, and Emcee of Jamaican descent.

He rose to prominence in the early 1990's as one half of the critically acclaimed group Pete Rock & CL Smooth. After the duo went their separate ways, Rock continued with a solo career that has garnered him worldwide respect, while not significant in terms of mainstream success.

Pete Rock played a major role in the merging of elements from jazz into hip-hop music, also known as jazz-rap, along with the groups Stetsasonic, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, and Gang Starr.

Considered one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time, he is often mentioned alongside DJ Premier and RZA as one of the mainstays of 1990's East Coast hip-hop production.

Pete Rock is also the older brother and younger cousin, respectively, of rappers Grap Luva and Heavy D.

Editors from About.com ranked him as #2 in their "Top 50 Hip-Hop Producers" list.
