Cocoa Brovaz - The Rude Awakening

Once the Smith & Wesson gun company realized there was a pair of rappers performing under the name "Smif-N-Wessun," the duo had to change their name. They chose Cocoa Brovaz and released their second album, Rude Awakening (possibly a reference to their legal troubles), under that moniker in the spring of 1998. All things considered, the legal mishap was little more than a speed bump for the duo; the end result is every bit as good as their first effort.
The pair of hardcore gangstas are still hurt by their reliance on clichés -- when it comes right down to it, they aren't offering any new insights, they're simply redoing the standard dope-money-guns-n-hoes line -- but they're saved by their energy and hard-hitting delivery. Usually, that makes the standard-issue music fairly compelling, but there are moments that drag on Rude Awakening. In other words, it's an improvement and a step forward in Cocoa Brovaz developing their own identity.

FILI-
This was slept on by a lot of people, I think due to the high anticipation of the album, regarding their name change and the classic status of their debut. This has since been help in high esteem, some people preferring this over Dah Shinin'. I wouldn't go that far but this was definitely a dope release in it's own right and stands high as one of the best album of the late 90's!

Despite what some people might say, I very much liked this album, it's a grower fo real. The chemistry is always their between Tek & Steele as they continue to bring them raw military minded rhymes. And the last track... well that contains the best beat Da Beatminerz have done since the mid-90's, no lie! The beat is incredible and really captures their signature sound to a tee, albeit for a new millenium audience. This was my third favorite from the triple threat releases after Sean Price's "Monkey Barz" & Buckshot & 9th Wonder's "Chemistry"... a hard act to follow but the 3 combined make for a very Powerful Impak!!!

Smif-N-Wessun - The Album

The Album is the fourth album by Hip hop duo Smif-N-Wessun, of the super group Boot Camp Clik, released on October 23 through Duck Down Records. The album comes two years after the duo's last effort, 2005's Smif-N-Wessun: Reloaded. The Album features guest appearances from Rock of Heltah Skeltah, Joell Ortiz, the Loudmouf Choir, Million Styles and Chuckii Star. For their new project, the group spent three weeks recording songs in Sweden in an effort to reinvent their sound. Every song on the album is produced by Swedish rapper and producer Ken Ring, with additional co-production provided by Rune Rotter, Tommy Tee, Collen, Webb and Soul Theory. The first song released from the album is "Stomp", featuring Rock and Joell Ortiz.

Tribute To Classics Show Coming To Bucktown!

Black Moon & Smif-N-Wessun's 'Tribute To Classics Show' Touching Down in BUCKTOWN.

Tek (of Smif-N-Wessun) - New Luv

"New Luv" is the first leak off 24Kt Smoke, the upcoming solo album from Tek of Smif-N-Wessun. The track is produced by Drawzilla, who is also on the hook. Tek delivers raw rhymes speaking on the state of hip hop, pays homage to some of the greats, and the digitization of the music industry.

Tek is currently putting the finishing touches on the album and should be released very soon, so be on the lookout for that.

General Steele, of Smif N Wessun Presents: Welcome To Bucktown (In stores May 5th), the first official release on the Bucktown USA Imprint. The soundtrack delivers some of Brooklyn's finest emcees: Boot Camp Clik, Sha Stimuli, Shabaam Sahdeeq of Polyrhythm Addicts, UG of the Cella Dwellas, Blahzah Blahzah, Smoothe Da Hustler, and Trigger Tha Gambler.

Welcome to Bucktown, the soundtrack, was inspired by the 1975 Blaxploitation film Bucktown. The soundtrack takes the listener through modern day Bucktown, AKA Brooklyn, as coined by the rap duo Smif-N-Wessun circa 1994, and explores the evolution and current conditions through the eyes of hip-hop Brooklyn artists.
