DJ K.O. - Wut I Do b/w Run & Gun (12" Single)

"Wut I Do" is the 3rd single off DJ K.O.’s EP, Living Out A State of Mind Vol. 2, which showcases East on the mic over a raw/gritty/bass heavy Analogic beat.

Keeping with the traditional formatting of the vinyl days, we’ve got a "B-Side" to liberate for this new Digital 12″. "Run & Gun" again features East on the mic with Analogic on the boards. This time around they enlist Finale & Chaundon to let the masses know who’s out to be mentioned amongst the best in the game. As if all this isn’t enough, we’ve even got a B-Side remix by Analogic.

Finale - The Senator (Prod. by Waajeed) (Music Video)

Detroit emcee Finale has drawn inspiration from another rust belt city for his newest video, "The Senator," from his spring-released, highly acclaimed A Pipe Dream And A Promise. Both the song and video are based largely on David Simon and HBO's Baltimore epic series, The Wire. The Senator in question is State Senator Clay Davis, not one of the show's main characters but certainly one of its most fascinating and divisive. Davis is an exploitative figure that acts as an intermediary between drug dealers and real estate developers, pocketing cash from both sides all the while. Finale uses Davis as a means of getting the point of the song across: calling out liars who are fronting as something they aren't. The song opens with the line "I heard a lot of y'all talkin' / A lot of you not walkin'." Finale even manages to make Davis' trademark exclamation "sheeeeeiiiiittttt" a centerpiece of the song's chorus. The video seamlessly blends Finale's Detroit with The Wire's Baltimore and employs key scenes and lines from the show to carry across Finale's punchlines.

The video is directed by Roy Miles Jr., who developed the video concept along with Interdependent Media General Manager/A&R, iD. On working together to create the video, Finale says, "I shot the footage of myself rapping while I was on the west coast doing interviews and press runs with Interdependent Media. When I left town I told iD and Roy what season's clip I used from The Wire. Roy and his assistant took the time to go through episodes of the show and find clips that synced up with various lines in the song. It's kind of dope that they were able to find specific scenes that matched up with what i was saying in the song."

The track, from Finale's debut A Pipe Dream And A Promise, features production by Waajeed. Finale pulls off an impressive tightrope walk in the song's lyrics. "The Senator" serves as a powerful call-out to those fronting as something they're not while incorporating the themes and action of the world of The Wire. "We climbin' up ladders and goin' through the suits / It ain't a game where the rappers hug and make up in order to take your books Iif it ain't truth I don't want it." Finale couples a smooth flow with impressively dense lyricism that will have the listener appreciating a new line with each progressive listen.

Finale - Paid Homage (J Dilla Tribute)

This bonus track off of Finale's A Pipe Dream & A Promise is a haunting remembrance of his producer and friend, J Dilla. The beat stays true to the art that was Dilla's production, featuring his trademark samples of jazzy rhythms, electric piano melodies, and a flowing backup vocal that give the beat its own human quality. Over this, Finale tells us the tale of a man from Detroit, a boy named James Yancey, who rose to local fame by making music for his city and his people. The story progresses to the time when Finale and J Dilla met, and from here it was a bond that not even Dilla's passing could break. Though it is clear he misses his friend, Finale finds the good in it all, telling us, "STOP: Don't mourn him, think of it like your man on tour, and God knew to set him free and he repped the D..."

A Pipe Dream & A Promise
contains several songs that send a shout to Dilla, and this track wraps up the album like the postscript of a long, inspired letter that reads: P.S. I will never forget J Dilla. Rest in peace.

Finale x J Dilla - "Heat"

The successes of J Dilla have served as inspiration and driving motivation for all Detroit artists. For Finale, who himself received a personal Dilla co-sign early in his career, it's only fitting that the emcee has a song on his album, A Pipe Dream And A Promise, produced by the late legend. That song is appropriately titled "Heat." Speaking about creating the song and being able to work with Dilla, Finale says, "It was off a beat CD, but it was done before he passed away and I was able to build with him about it before he passed. I did three joints with him off the beat CDs he sent me; 'Heat' ended up being one of the joints we did. I look at that joint more like a tribute"

Featuring hard drums and distorted chops, "Heat" finds Finale spitting a braggadocio-filled stream-of-consciousness flow that showcases the Detroit emcee's ability to rip a mic. Showing off his smooth wordplay and seamless flow, Finale raps, "Be a needle, we need you to get in the groove / Don't sleep, keep it rolling / I'm a truck, I live in Michigan/ But Chilly never been in my forecast, like Usher / Won't change, even with the aftermath, like Busta." Closing out the song is a live performance clip of an impassioned Finale chanting J Dilla's name in tribute to the fallen legend. The ultimate tribute, though, is keeping the producer's name alive with great music, and with "Heat," Finale does just that.

A Pipe Dream And A Promise is now available everywhere, make sure you cop it if you haven't already!

Finale Set To Release New Album

Finale, part of the new vanguard of Detroit emcees, will release his debut album “A Pipe Dream And A Promise” on April 7th via Interdependent Media. A former automotive engineer, Finale has experienced firsthand what embodies the spirit of a city that is steeped in such a rich musical and motor history. Using his experiences as his muse, Finale delves into deeply personal issues on “A Pipe Dream And A Promise” where his “pipe dream” of a rap career takes fruition and the “promises” he has made to himself and others finally become realities. To promote the album, Interdependent Media will soon reveal an online video game reminiscent of Super Mario Brothers starring Finale that will allow fans to win a free Finale remix track by completing the game. Interdependent Media will also be giving away limited edition coloring books featuring Finale and other iM artists.

A Pipe Dream and A Promise” pulses with the evolving Detroit hip-hop sound; a multi-layered blend of hard-hitting beats, abstract electronic instrumentals, and illustrative lyrics that tell the personal story of a man’s journey in a city on the cusp of a simultaneous economic breakdown and musical resurgence. Featuring production from J Dilla, Black Milk, Khrysis, Nottz, and Oddisee, the album showcases the work of a variety of exceptionally talented producers, with each offering a different musical foundation for Finale to showcase his lyrical onslaught.

Speaking about the title of the album, Finale says, “That’s my definition of hip-hop. There are two sides to hip-hop or any dream that you follow. It starts as a dream that everyone says is a pipe dream. They deter you from your dreams. But as artists we promise ourselves we are going to follow our dreams.

Before making his entrance into hip-hop, Finale worked as an automotive engineer promising to one day follow his dream of becoming a rapper. Making the rounds at local Detroit open mics and emcee battles, Finale began to mingle with local talents like Guilty Simpson and One.Be.Lo. After emailing some joints back and forth with J Dilla, Finale finally met him backstage at the DEMF (Detroit Electronic Music Festival), where Dilla introduced him to Madlib, saying that he was one of the best in the game. “It was an honor and definitely a defining moment,” says Finale. After realizing his passion and talent for hip-hop, Finale decided to finally quit his day job, follow his true passion, and make music a full-time career.
