Mike Dreams - Gettin' Ours (Prod. by Teddy Roxpin)

Fresh off his switch from "Young Son" to the more mature (and distinctive) moniker Mike Dreams, Minne-apple up-and-comer Michael Hannah brings his trademark upbeat touch to the topic of hater-dom on single number three off his long-awaited sophomore full-length. After a deceptively low-key intro, Gettin’ Ours kicks into high gear – Teddy Roxpin, the beatsmith who worked his magic on This Far, takes a similar approach here, delivering an infectious, Chipmunk-sampled groove with a dash of rock ‘n’ roll energy. Dreams keeps things civil as he addresses his doubters, but his unfailingly polite rhymes hit home with the force of a dozen profanity-laced tirades – packed with motivational wisdom and clever wordplay, his confident verses should leave the critics with little to say.

Keyel - Volume One

Keyel Music

For years hip-hop culture has been the voice of young people. Through style, dance, art, and music, hip-hop has pushed forward and evolved into a worldwide phenomenon. As of late it seems that the game has given birth to a generation of emcees that have forgotten the roots of hip-hop. Keyel not only remembers but embodies the original art form. Keyel is a group of emcees, and a DJ (PS x Prose x DJ ESO x Holy) who shared a common outlook on life and hip hop music, and came together in a time where music as a whole began to change. Hailing from the mid western city of Cleveland, Ohio; they follow in the path of hip-hop's greats such as Slum Village, J Dilla, Common, and Blackstar. With innovative production, thought provoking lyrics, and a fresh sense of style, Keyel is guaranteed to have heads nodding all across the world.

Diamond District: Mini Documentary

In anticipation of the official release of their forthcoming debut effort, In The Ruff, the trio of Oddisee, X.O., and yU, collectively making up the group Diamond District, take some time out from their day to break down the boundaries that define the area where the group was born and raised – the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia). From a bird's eye view, Oddisee points over the bridge to where he grew up in Maryland and X.O. and yU show us where our nation's capital lies on the northwest corner. Diamond District is essentially standing at the crossroads of the DMV, and even more important than their geographic location is the mind state and way of life that comes from living at that intersection. As the video progresses, each member brings us a little deeper into their worlds. X.O. explains how the movement began in DC and slowly spilled over into Maryland and Virginia; YU brings us into his friend's apartment where he delivers a flow packed with cleverness and slick delivery; Oddisee brings us into his modest home studio where he shows us that you don't need a lavish setup to create head-nodding beats that we are accustomed to hearing from the boom-bap beat-smith. And with each segment you leave with more insight than you came with, as the trio drops knowledge, both individually and collectively. Diamond District's In The Ruff will be available October 27th via Mello Music Group.

Kam Moye - Let's Be Honest (Prod. by Veterano)

Kam Moye, a different breed of emcee, is gearing up to release his newest album, Splitting Image. Being the first album released after his name change from Supastition to his actual birth name, Kam shows that he has developed lyrically and isn't afraid to touch on mature subject matter. The album is due October 27th on MYX Music Label. The lead single off the album is "Lets Be Honest" with production being handled by Veterano. The song is about having a humble attitude towards life, something rarely spoken about in today's industry. Talking about the inspiration behind the song's concept, Kam says, "The song was inspired by a quote that I read once which said 'happiness isn't having what you want, it's wanting what you have.' That's my perspective in life on everything from family to my career. It's not settling, but sometimes you gotta just accept that maybe it wasn't meant for you to have what everyone else has... It's cool to dream but not to the point where you don't take notice of how good you have it already to just be alive."

Kam relays the song's message from the get-go, saying, "If you don't appreciate what you have right now, you'll never appreciate what's coming to you in the future." The song is conceptual in the way that each verse tackles different issues relating to materialism and superficial tendencies. Kam goes in on materialism for the first verse before touching on women and relationships in verse two and stardom in the third and final verse, rapping, "I don't need people in the streets to know me / Man, I kind of like keeping it discreet and low-key." With Veterano providing a soulful backdrop for Kam's true-to-life delivery, this track is poised to turn some heads as the lead single off his new album. Be sure to get a taste of Kam Moye's new sound, and look out for Splitting Image via MYX Music Label October 27, 2009.

Arrested Development - La La La x Bloody (Videos)

From the album, "Strong" - This is a light hearted song filled with incredible energy and Arrested Development flair. Live in concert, this song gets the crowd fired up! Incredible vocals by Tasha and an awesome verse by Speech, during a time when he was sick with a cold. It brought a quality to his voice that was captured on this song only! 1 Love and Ras also shine on this song. Another proud gem from Vagabond Records and Tapes.

The song "Bloody" is a poignant essay on the music industries power or lack of when it comes to world events. During the 90's, rap as it does even today had a powerful voice and a chance to bring issues of genocide in the Congo and death on US streets to light, but instead talked about bling and thongs. Meanwhile rappers were literally getting blown away and record companies were reaping the monetary benefits. Speech's lyrics come from his heart as a man who wants to see hip hop live up to it's full potential.

With a sleep when your dead work ethic, expect to hear plenty of Danny Diggs in the future...

Over the last few years Thaione Davis has consistently and carefully put out quality hip hop and is easily one of the most promising emcees out of Chicago in years. Featuring guest appearances by Infinito 2017, Longshot and more. It's got both a late 90's and current feel set to the backdrop of Southside Chicago and overall is definitely not one to sleep on.

Jern Eye - Get Down (Prod. by Keelay & Zaire)

Jern Eye teams up with hip-hop production duo Keelay & Zaire for a second time, releasing "Get Down," the first official single from his upcoming album, Vision. This track is exactly what the title suggests: a funky dance groove that will get your head nodding and feet tapping. A raw, acoustic drumbeat picks up the track's momentum and never lets it drop. The hook is filled out with funky synth punches, various sound effects and a sample of the godfather of soul himself, James Brown, singing the song's title. When asked what message he was trying to deliver with the track, lines like "A little older so my game tight / play to win so I don't play right / hit you in the head I don't play fight / a little room in the jeans I don't wear tights" portray the message Jern Eye is going for. Speaking on that message, Jern Eye says "I was trying to convey that swagger comes with real lyricism, so no matter how fly you think you are you'll only be as fly as the music you make." With lackluster, cookie-cutter production and lyrics being the norm nowadays, Jern Eye is a breath of fresh air that will stay making sure you Get Down. Jern Eye's new album, Vision, will be available October 13th via MYX Music Label.

Fashawn - Fash Plays It Cool (Prod. by The Alchemist)

I'll be honest, today is the first day I've even heard about this project and now I'm super anxious to know more about it. Anyways, the incredibly talented 20 year old emcee Fashawn has linked up with The Alchemist for an album entitled The Antidote. Fashawn's debut album Boy Meets World has yet to be released (scheduled for October 20th), so I assume that this project won't be available for a while. However, to tide you over a bit, I have provided a link to the first single off the album, "Fash Plays It Cool". Pay attention folks, this kid is gonna blow up once his debut drops!

Kam Moye - Blue Skies (Prod. by Apollo Brown)

Kam Moye (aka Supastition) returns to close out this summer with a brand new breakup anthem, produced by Detroit's up and comer Apollo Brown. The track is "Blue Skies," but don't let the title throw you. The flowing lyrics are not about blue skies, but the lack thereof. Kam Moye rhymes about a relationship gone wrong and the frustration of trying to save face in public, a dilemma that many can relate to. About this theme, Kam states that, "The song isn't really about my own relationship, but more-so written from the standpoint of people close to me. It's about being with someone who seemed perfect in the beginning but somewhere down the line, just got too comfortable and became a big disappointment in your eyes." He raps, "When people see us in public they think it's all love, like, 'take a look at them two together, they got it all,' but little do they know we rarely get our problems solved. Most of the time I'm wishing that I was not involved." These straight forward, no BS lyrics combine with a looped, slightly eerie female vocal melody to preach the tracks message. "There are no blue skies." Be on the look out the debut Kam Moye album, Splitting Image via MYX Music Label. The album will be in stores October 27, 2009.

Crown Royale (Buff1 x DJ Rhettmatic) - We Gotcha

As Buff1 says, "We did 'We Gotcha' to let cats know we had more in store. Just a fun joint for the fans." Rhettmatic had this to say about the song: "When I made the track for "We Gotcha," it was originally made for a producer's showcase in LA where I was sharing the stage with Illmind, M-Phazes, Keelay & Zaire, and Veterano. I gave Buff1 the beat him and thus, "We Gotcha" was born. Here's a boom bap track that I hope that the DJs can appreciate. Being a DJ myself, I always try to make a track that's DJ friendly."

Below is the press release info regarding the recent signing of Crown Royale to MYX Music Label:
Bay Area-based MYX Music Label is proud to announce the signing of Crown Royale, the hip-hop duo comprised of Michigan emcee Buff1 and LA-based DJ Rhettmatic, in anticipation of their 2010 release.

The formation of Crown Royale marks a new chapter in the careers of both Buff1 and DJ Rhettmatic, and both are proud to have MYX Music involved, "I'm honored to be part of the MYX Music Label family," says Rhettmatic, "To have a company like MYX interested and excited in the music Buff and myself make is a blessing, especially during these times with only a few indie labels around." Crown Royale now joins an extensive artist roster, and are more than proud to be in the same label family as Keelay & Zaire, Jern Eye, Fortilive, Kam Moye aka Supastition, and D.Black. "They're building a strong roster and I'm proud to be associated with so many artists I respect," explains Buff, "We're blessed to have a label that believes in what we do, is a fan of what we do, and wants to join forces with us."

Karim Panni, head of MYX Music Label, believes that, "Crown Royale represents that pure hip-hop feel the game needs right now. The combination of Buff1 and DJ Rhettmatic is lethal. Rhettmatic is a good friend of mine and he approached me a year ago about the album, and once I heard some of the music, the signing was a no-brainer." I'm super excited to combine forces with A-Side Worldwide. We've both been in the indie game for a minute, and are creating what looks like a championship team." Having also recently signed emcee One Be Lo, MYX is expanding quickly and continues to affirm its spot as one of the leading independent hip-hop labels. “Buff1 and Rhettmatic is a classic combination. Crown Royale is undeniable. Both are at the top of their game right now, and I can’t wait for the world to hear this music," proclaims A-Side Worldwide President Jackson Perry, "We‘re happy to hear that MYX is just as excited about CR as we are."

Both Buff1 and DJ Rhettmatic developed their careers in hip-hop hotbeds. A native of southeast Michigan, Buff1 witnessed the golden years of the Detroit scene - an influence that's instantly recognizable in his polished cadence. Buff's two solo records, Pure and There's Only One, define his style over a decade-long run of touring and recording. Working as part of the septet Athletic Mic League (AML), Buff has gone on to be commended as part of URB's NEXT 100. A couple thousand miles away, Rhettmatic was absorbing the hip-hop Mecca that is southern California. He has worked with legendary DJ crew Beat Junkies, hip-hop group The Visionaries, and spun for Cypress Hill, Talib Kweli, the late J Dilla, and a stack of Stones Throw artists. After finally connecting through Now On member DJ Haircut (Mayer Hawthorne) and Jackson Perry, Rhettmatic and Buff instantly realized their chemistry, adoration for each other's work, and decided a collaboration was needed. Look for more from Crown Royale as they plan their debut 2010 release.

Bekay - I Am (Prod. by The Alchemist; Cuts by DJ Revolution)

As far as I'm aware, this song hasn't been posted on any of the major hip-hop blog/sites as of yet, that's a first for this site. On "I Am", Bekay delivers a timeless ode to hip-hop as he slaloms through an anthem-like piano loop conducted by The Alchemist. The legendary DJ Revolution lends his turntable wizardry to the hook by cleverly orchestrating hip-hop quotables from Das Efx, Stetsasonic, Common and Dead Prez. The new album, Hunger Pains, hits stores November 10th via Coalmine Records.
