FILI-
Even though it's a mixtape/street album, it still stirred up a lot of debate with people automatically comparing it to his last to official albums. It took a while for it to grow on me, the commercial feel to a few tracks and the constant Green Lantern skits didn't help but over time you sort of adjust to the more polished sound because Tech still has that political mindset and always delivers his message with authority. You can never deny the man's skill and you have to appreciate his subject matter coz only a few can deliver it like he can and make you really site up and take notice. There are definitely a few bangers on here and without comparing it to his previous work, this is some dope shit! I mean, no album since 2003!!! Anything Tech drops now will be met with anticipation and excitement. I dig this now and definitely looking forward to his next official album, rumored to be called The Middle Passage.

Immortal Technique - Revolutionary Vol. 1

MySpace

In 2001, Immortal Technique released his first album Revolutionary Vol. 1 without the help of a record label or distribution, instead using money he had made from winning various rap battles. In November 2002, he was listed by The Source as the month's featured "Unsigned Hype", which highlights artists that are not signed to a record label. The following year, in September 2003, he received the coveted "Hip Hop Quotable" in The Source for a song entitled "Industrial Revolution" from his second album. Consequently, since he did not have a record deal or distribution at the time, Immortal Technique is the only rapper in history to have a "Hip Hop Quotable" while being unsigned. He finally released his second album Revolutionary Vol. 2 in 2003 under Viper Records/Nature Sounds distribution on CD and double LP. In 2004, Viper Records and, in 2005, Babygrande Records have re-released Immortal Technique's debut, Revolutionary Vol. 1, to make it available to a wider audience.

Now On - Tomorrow Already

MySpace

Music lovers the world over have been inundated by cynics who think they’re part of a dying industry. On the contrary, Now On is leading a renaissance of the very fundamentals that defined popular music at its conception: creativity, originality, fearlessness, and of course, entertainment. In fusing and confusing this elemental barometer, Now On emerges with a grimy, post-futuristic freshness unseen or heard to date. Consisting of emcees IX Lives (son of Larry “Squirrel” Demps of the legendary Dramatics) and Jackson Perry, together with Haircut of Athletic Mic League (AML), Now On is set to make their tenure in the music industry the very definition of “def.”

In September 2008, Now On released their transcendent, new album “Tomorrow Already”. The campaign was supported by the A-Side Worldwide management team and provided a glimpse of The New Model™ at work. With the Lab Techs production team at the helm, Now On has created a timeless, melodic, electro-soul sound that is both genre-defying and genre-defining – a sound that is quickly separating them amidst the bubbling Los Angeles music scene. Having shared the stage with Eminem, Slum Village, The Roots, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, The Pharcyde, De La Soul and Little Brother, to name a few – the members of Now On have felt the influence of the industry’s elite, and are prepared to stand among them.

In 2007 Now On released three highly anticipated projects in the U.S., Europe, Japan and Australia, including their latest digital masterpiece “Don’t Call It A Mixtape” hosted by the legendary DJ House Shoes. Now On’s debut full-length “Eye Level” received critical acclaim from a variety of publications, including a 4/5 star review in the February 2007 issue of Scratch Magazine. Later in the year, “The Willows EP” released exclusively on Japanese label Subcontact, hit record stores in the East Asian territory, providing a sneak preview of Now On’s new sound. Since their relocation from Michigan in 2005, Now On has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe, and have pulled themselves up by their melodious moon-bootstraps to become a staple in the LA scene, where the unparalleled energy of their live show finds entertainment industry skeptics pumping their fists in the air, screaming “Live for the Now, On to the future!”

KRS-One - Return Of The Boom Bap

By 1993, hip-hop was transitioning from an organic form of musical expression into a big business fabricating stars. With many icons from his era either aging or losing their relevance (e.g., Chuck D, Rakim), KRS-One dropped a gem of an album that not only navigated the sound of the day but led the charge. Shedding his previous Boogie Down Productions moniker, KRS-One's Return of the Boom Bap is not just an album: it's KRS's call to arms for the return of hard beats and real rap in hip-hop music. The former took many forms, thanks to the recruitment of Gang Starr's DJ Premier, who was hitting his stride as hip-hop's preeminent beat-maker. Primo crafted the classic head-nod rhythm of the title track, the bump of "Outta Here," an autobiographical tale of KRS-One's rise in hip-hop, and the dance hall-inspired riddims of "Black Cop" and "Sound of da Police." Lyrically, KRS-One displayed variety in both style and content, meshing old-school bombast ("Mortal Thought"), consciousness ("Higher Level"), and crafty and conceptual wordplay ("I Can't Wake Up"). The album opens with KRS-One boasting, even decreeing, that he would "be here forever." At the crossroads, this album made it seem true.

Domingo - The Most Underrated

MySpace

Domingo is a producer from east NY that has crafted bangers for your favorite east coast emcees but gets no shine for whatever reason. On this release, the aptly titled The Most Underrated, Domingo provides vintage east coast boom bap for legends, vets, and newcomers alike to get busy on. The results do vary, but the production end is solid. Names like Big Daddy Kane, Ras Kass, Canibus, Kool G. Rap, The Beatnuts, Tonedeff, Slug, Immortal Technique, Non Phixion, and Brother Ali show up to bless the tracks lovely. The end result is forty six minutes of dope hip hop music that's full of the grimy, boom bap sound reminiscent of the mid-90's Golden Era.

This was a quiet one when it dropped back in '07, why? I got no idea because this album is bangin'!!! From the old skool mc's to the new skool, you got a bit of everything on here and you can't really go wrong when you got East Coast vet Domingo lacing the tracks with some good ol' fashioned throwback sounds. This was one of the most slept on albums by one of the most underrated producers in the game so do yourself a favor, download, enjoy and bump that shit loud! One more little thing, the last 2 tracks for me are my absolute favourites. Tonedeff is a legend and does a great narration over a latin tinged beat for Easy Now and the same can be said for the underground powerhouses of Rhymesayers labelmates Slug & Brother Ali and also QN5's punchline king PackFM, who absolutely murder the last track Fuck You Mean.

Lord Jamar - The 5% Album

MySpace

Lord Jamar's choice to craft a solo album, near-bereft of his Brand Nubian brethren, is a risky one. Stepping away, to some degree, from his established sound and lyrical content, Jamar excels melding abstract Islamic concepts with solid production. The album's production, though never terrible, never transcends its murky palette, but Jamar's lilting drawl pushes each track to a higher level. The religious message blatantly strewn across the album's canvas can be heavy-handed at times, but is to be lauded for its effort to weave consciousness with classic hip hop. Jamar's solo album is too long and weighed down by extraneous skits, but is still chock full of enjoyable highlights.

Mr. Brady (of Deep Rooted) - Dirty

MySpace

Originally from San Diego, Mr. Brady started off breaking in the mid 80's. Since the first time he heard hip hop, he's been hooked and started experimenting with rhymes around 1988. It wasn't until 1990-'91 that he started taking it seriously and began going to the lab to lay down tracls. He started off by using 4 tracks and between 1993-'94 he started putting out tapes and selling them in the streets independently. By 1994 he was featured on his first vinyl and was well accepted by the true hip hop world. By '96 he had a full LP out and 2 singles on vinyl.

His music has led him to Vancouver where he met up with Swollen Members and was signed to Battle Axe Records in 1998-'99. Since that time he has been featured on many compilations and has released two albums with Battle Axe that were released worldwide. Features on Dirty include artists such as Swollen Members, Evidence, Moka Only, LMNO, OhNo, and more.

Mr. Brady has toured many cities from the U.S. and all over Canada, opening for such acts as Slum Village, KRS-One, The Liks, Wu-Tang, and was also featured on the Vans Warped Tour. Now years later he has since met up with Johaz, Brea, & DJ Artistic to form the group Deep Rooted, in hopes of bringing about a soulful vibe for the whole world to feel.

Killah Priest - Black August

Black August is a phenomenon, it's not a gimmick. It's my heart spilled out on paper. When it comes to lyrics, few can express the trials and tribulations of the daily grind like Killah Priest can. On the innovative stylings of "When I'm Writing", Killah breaks down his personal form of psychotherapy into a series of mentally charged metaphors, "I write rhymes like I'm doing time/Listen, when I hit the pen I start doing a sentence/ I got the flow locked behind each bar." Later on the conceptually driven "Deja Vu", Priest flips a dramatic storyline of a criminal trapped in a horrific turn of events. And "Robbery" perfectly exemplifies Priest's metaphoric vision as he uses an everyday heist to represent his aim to claim what is rightfully his. Pushing past what's expected of him, "Rain" finds Priest on the come-up, spitting with a Midwestern influenced bounce track alongside Main Flow.

With an arsenal of solid tracks and candid lyrics, Killah Priest is in the best shape of his life. With his freshly inked deal with Recon/Artemis, Priest is determined to make serious moves. "It's about time I had the right promotion behind me. A real team of individuals, that's what this album is all about," declares Priest. "That's why I called it Black August. It's gonna be a terror to some, but to others, it'll be a nice day." With his steadfast devotion to enhancing hip-hop culture, Killah Priest is poised to break some new ground and give the game exactly what it's missing.

Killah Priest - View From Masada

The second solo album from Wu-Tang Clan-affiliated rapper Killah Priest, View From Masada jumps out the box banging, with tracks like "Hard Times," "Maccabbean Revolt," and the title track. Killah Priest is joined on View From Masada by Ras Kass ("Whut Part of the Game?") and Canibus ("Bop Your Head"). Priest brings heat on every track, at times elevating his lyrical game numerous notches.

Primarily produced by Just Blaze and Wiz, the album is laced with enough rich tracks and vibrant beats to rock any Range Rover or Land Cruiser. Some of the other highlights here are "Gotta Eat," "Rap Legend," and "I'm Wit That," which was produced by Shamello and Buddah. View From Masada is a mature sounding, well-conceived sophomore effort.

Killah Priest - Heavy Mental

MySpace

Heavy Mental is the debut album of American emcee Killah Priest, an associate of hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan and a member of the group Sunz of Man. It was released on May 10 1998, on Geffen Records.

The album is resplendent with references to Judeo-Christian-Islamic mythology and theology, drawing parallels to the condition of Black people in the United States to that of the Jewish people during Exodus. A notable track on the CD is B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth), which had already appeared on GZA's 1995 Liquid Swords album in a slightly different form. Another is the title track, which features Killah Priest rhyming in a style reminiscent of slam poetry and prominently features a didgeridoo. “One Step,” with its refrain of “Your arms too short to box with God,” reached #84 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop singles chart. Priest released the album through Geffen/MCA Records, which already had a relationship with Wu-Tang Clan. The album peaked at 24 on the Billboard top-200 and at 4 in the Top R&B/Hip Hop charts.

Jedi Mind Tricks Presents: Outerspace - God's Fury

MySpace

With two solo records and a Jedi Mind Tricks' affiliated compilation of rare cuts and B-Sides under their belts (cumulative scans of 22,500+ units), Outerspace, the Philadelphia based duo of Planetary and Crypt The Warchild (and core members of the 40,000+ scanning Army of the Pharaohs supergroup), offer their third solo album: God's Fury. The tag team has been bubbling in the hardcore/underground scene ever since being taken under the wing of indie-powerhouse Jedi Mind Tricks.

Now, with an entrenched profile in the indie hip-hop scene as well as the fully branded cosign of retail powerhouse Jedi Mind Tricks, Outerspace is poised to take the market by storm with the third installment in their already impressive solo discography. With features from Vinnie Paz (Jedi Mind Tricks), Armaggedon (Terror Squad), Psycho Realm and fellow Army of the Pharaohs members King Syze, Doap Nixon, King Magnetic & Des Devious, God's Fury is another storied entry into the Jedi Mind Tricks/Army of the Pharaohs' affiliated group's catalog.

15. The Last Supper feat. Chief Kamachi & Celph Titled
16. Our Father

FILI-
This album is dope, not as good as their first effort but probably as good if not better than their last album Blood Brothers. They decide to keep it close to home this time around by getting the majority of the AOTP camp on here. The beats didn't really jump out at me like they did on their last two albums but lyrically, they get better and better, especially Planetary, who is one of my favorite MC's from AOTP. I'd definitely day this is better than the Doap Nixon and King Syze albums, now it's left to JMT to see what kind of album they release for me to decide which is the best release from the AOTP camp this year. As it stands, this is the best one so far.

Sabac Red - The Ritual

MySpace

Sabac Red's new album The Ritual continues his politically fueled themes that he crafted during his time in Non Phixion and on his first album "A Change Gon Come." The DVD will include Sabac Red in a full personal bio as presented at a public speaking event in San Francisco, a day with Sabac Red following him to the different schools where he works with the youth in The Bay area. Live show footage from his US and Europe tour with Ill Bill and DJ Eclipse, freestyles and the making of The Collabo Collection Vol. 2 Mix CD as well as The Making of A change Gon' Come music video and much more…

02. World Army (Prod. by Skammadix)
03. As Children Cry (Prod. by Skammadix)
04. Open Book Policy (Prod. by Undefined Beats)

06. Death & Destiny feat. Slaine & Jordan & Playahnice" Battiste (Prod. by SickNature)
07. The Ritual (Prod. by Blue Sky Black Death)
08. Viva Boricua feat. La Bruja (Prod. by Skammadix)
09. Americas A Business feat. Revolution Of The Mind (Prod. by Krohme)

12. When The Lights Go Out feat. Ill Bill (Prod. by Ill Bill)
13. Breaking Through (Prod. by Blue Sky Black Death)
14. Darkness Deepens feat. Ill Bill & Slaine (Prod. by Blue Sky Black Death)
15. Shift Of The Earth (Prod. by Blue Sky Black Death)

FILI-
This is one dope album right here. If I had to choose between former Non Phixion memebers Ill Bill or Sabac's latest offering, I'd go with Sabac. They're both great lyricists but Sabac has the better beats on his album, almost sounding like a typical A.O.T.P. album with some ill production coming from the likes of Snowgoons, Blue Sky Black Death and more. Sabac continues on his political subject matter so you know this guy's gonna school you on what's goin on in the world of politics. All in all, a great album and well worth the 4 year wait!

X-Rae-
I have been highly anticipating this album since I first heard word of it, knowing that Sabac would deliver a collection of works with real substance. The first track brought a smile to my face because I knew I was about to hear a dope ass album. Over an amazing, softer-than-usual Snowgoons beat, The Commitment has Sabac speaking a positive message of bettering oneself and listing various self-commitments in order to do so, like whoa, did I just hear a Psycho-Logical Records affiliate say that he’ll endeavour to ‘treat women with respect‘? Dope. We’re provided with a throw your hands up anthem in the form of World Army as well as the nationalistic Viva Boricua which is bursting with Latin flavour and one of my favourites.

As Children Cry is maaad cheesy , I mean.. seriously sweet.. From the kiddie singing the hook (and Sabac singing along!) to Skammadix’s production. BUT, I was touched, what can I say.. Maybe because I’m a woman, maybe because I’m a mother, maybe it’s the hormones, either way, I felt quite emotional lol Everything said is true. Especially if you know anything about the truly inspiring work he does outside of the booth (if you don’t know, get to know. Wikipedia is your friend). It’s still not a track you would skip passed, it’s just probably a track you’d listen to when you ain’t around your homeboys.

Production on the album is solid. Skammadix and the wonderful Blue Sky Black Death (BSBD) handle the majority, but there are some standout contributions from others. Nice to see production from Philly’s Cimer Amor of the Caen project on Empty-V, a track over which Sabac spits double time rhymes regarding the use of mass media as a form of control, (MTV get it?) ,a theme which you’ll see revisited on other joints. A perfect example would be Americas A Business where Krohme’s beat had me pulling that ugly face you pull when you hear something dope (you know what I‘m talkin about! Lol). The electric guitar riff coupled with the cuts on the hook is a firey combo. Denmark’s Sicknature asserts himself as a producer we'll definitely be seeing more of and puts his stamp on The Life I Live, a reflective tale of Sabac’s journey in hip hop to where he’s at now, and Death & Destiny, where he tackles the subject of life and death being a natural cycle and matter of fate.

This whole album is balanced to me, in every aspect. If you’re familiar with Sabac, you’ll already know of his capability to rip the mic, however on The Ritual, it is the subject matter that moves to the forefront, consequently, I haven't included any lyric examples in this review. His stance on political and social issues is laid out for the listener and yet he doesn’t come across as some wacky conspiracy theorist nor as too preachy because he balances it by tackling other subjects and by personalizing the album through rhyming about himself. Production, too, is balanced. He uses a range of producers, who lace us with a variety of different sounds and styles, from the orchestral, epic type beats like Ill Bill’s When The Lights Go Out or BSBD’s cinematic Shift Of The Earth to quieter, introspective beats which compliment Sabac’s attempt to open our eyes. The album won’t blow you away on some lyrical rhymescheme genius, but that’s not what Sabac is trying to do here. He has a viewpoint and a message that he wants people to hear and I think he is successful. I also like the fact that he has kept guest appearances down to a minimum, even more so, that he has chosen Slaine, who I'm a big fan of, to grace a couple of the joints. That he has not succumbed to any influence from his fellow PLR members, in terms of musical style is also admirable. He still credit's Necro with the what is due but has just kept making the music that best says him. I personally loved the album; as I said, I had been looking forward to this and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

Decay - The Unlikely Hero

MySpace

Decay is an emcee that comes along every once in a while and captivates the listener with raw talent and a hunger to tell his story. In 2005 he released locally his debut "In Retrospect", an album full of political and personal subject matter ranging from being kicked out of his house to the portrayal of minorities in the media. In 2007, he collaborated with Akron, Ohio producer Fluent (Uncut Raw, Green Llama) to form City Slick. They released an independent hip hop firecracker called "The Antique Black", that garnered attention from various online stores, news sites and blogs.

Recently, Decay dropped "The Unlikely Villain" mixtape for free download online. The mixtape features a few members of the Green Llama crew (Decay, Selfish, Tone Liv, Butta Verses, Fluent, Vincent Price, Ill Don, Mr. Dibiase and Dj Monky) and drops from The Molemen. This move helped D grow his fan base as well as set up promotions for his new album, "The Unlikely Hero" on Molemen Records.

"The Unlikely Hero" features production by Panik, Memo and PNS, who bring that sound of raw hip hop the Molemen are known for. Selfish (Uncut Raw) also drops a gem on the album for the Green Llama posse cut "Easy" featuring Selfish, Tone Liv and Butta Verses (a long time collaborator with De La Soul). Fellow Molemen Records label mate Astonish also makes a guest appearance on the concert favorite track "Get Loose". Aside from those two collaborations, Decay is left to fend on his own, the rest of the album, to show and prove that skills have come to save the day.

02. Push (Prod. by Memo)
03. The Unlikely Hero (Prod. by Panik)

10. Get Loose feat. Astonish (Prod. by Panik)
11. Sunsplash (Prod. by Memo)
12. Easy (The Llama Way) feat. Selfish, Tone Liv & Butta Verses (Prod. by Selfish)
13. Oh Lordy (Prod. by Panik)
14. Cloud (Prod. by Panik)

FILI-
Why oh why do people continue to sleep on the Molemen?!! They're responsible for some of the best hip hop to come out of Chicago or anywhere for that matter for the longest while now. This superb release follows on from Astonish's From Now Until Forever and Verbal Kent's Fist Shaking. Production is all handled by the Molemen crew of Panik, Memo & PNS and features fellow Molemen MC, Astonish as well as his Green Llama brethrens, Selfish & Tone Liv and also featuring a guest spot from up-coming MC, Butta Verses. This should definitely by in everyone's collection. The future looks bright for Decay and the Molemen and as long as they keep putting out dope releases like this then I'll continue to support them like I have been doing since the late 90's!

Termanology - Politics As Usual

At the onset of 2006, Termanology caught his big break when legendary producer DJ Premier blessed him with one of his signature, scratchladen beats. "Watch How It Go Down" instantly became an underground classic and Term appeared on hip-hop's international radar. The conscious hood anthem garnered the earnest MC tons of praise, landing him in The Source's "Unsigned Hype" and XXL's "Show and Prove" columns. Since then, he has quickly climbed the industry ranks with his "Hood Politics" mixtape series and continued collaborations with DJ Premier and other big name producers. Term's hard work resulted in a joint venture deal with Brooklyn-based label Nature Sounds, which he signed in late 2007.

Butta Verses - Reality BV

MySpace

Butta Verses, a Bronx-bred rapper who now calls Fort Lauderdale, FL home made his debut appearance on De La Soul's 2004 release The Grind Date. Butta's name was bestowed upon him by fellow MCs at local ciphers but once his mixtape reached the ears of DJ Maseo from De La Soul, his rhymes started reaching neighborhoods around the world. Maseo signed Butta to his label and he began touring with De La Soul to promote The Grind Date. Butta went on to release several mixtapes while playing over 200 shows on De La Soul's international tours and began recording with his crew GCD (Glee Club Detention) as well as Seattle's Vitamin D and Bean One for his debut album "Brand Spankin". Today, Butta is wrapping up his follow-up album, "Reality BV" (Culture Kings Music | Domination Recordings) featuring the underground smash hits "If I Die" and "Speech Therapy" featuring A-Butta of Natural Elements and production from The Mighty V.I.C., Marco Polo, Bean One and Tzarizm among others. John Robinson & MF Doom - Who Is This Man?

MySpace

Who Is This Man? In this case, the man is John Robinson. Formerly known as Lil Sci from Scienz of Life, a group who had put out records on Bobbito Garcia's Fondle 'Em imprint and Sub Verse Music in the late 90s and early 2000s. Robinson later went on to release his debut solo album I Am Not For Sale, followed by a collaborative effort called Lil Sci and Carlos Nino present What's The Science? After working with John on previous projects such as King Gheedorah and multiple Scienz of Life albums, MF Doom suggested they embark on a full-length concept album, to be executive produced by The Villain himself where Lil Sci would take on his government name, John Robinson. The result is Who Is This Man?, an incredible group of songs produced entirely by Doom, with DJ Rhetmatic of the World Famous Beat Junkies laying down all the cuts. The album was completed four years ago but due to complications it remained in limbo and unreleased. Fast forward to 2009 and the project has been picked up by the good folks at High Water Music and will finally get the official release it deserves. Who Is This Man? showcases Doom's diversity as a producer and contains arguably the best display of his talents from behind the boards since his debut album Doomsday. From the dark tone of "Black Gold" to the melodic love tale of "There She Goes", this album is filled with Doom's signature sound bites and production style. He also lends a verse to the album's closing track "Sorcerers." John Robinson shows incredible lyrical range throughout the album, like on "Indy 102" where he breaks down the indie Hip Hop grind or on the aforementioned "Black Gold" with its social commentary on the war for oil. Join John Robinson and MF Doom on this journey and see if you can figure out who this man really is...
