With lyricism that has garnered as much love and respect as his production Rashid Hadee shares with you his interpretation of an album he simply feels is honest (no pun intended). If you wonder why he chose 808’s to “chop not screw” instead of one of the more openly loved releases from Kanye’s college themed trilogy, Hadee will simply tell you 'because 808’s & Heartbreak is pure genius!'

Advanced Placement (Adjust & Product) - Where Do We Sign?!!?

MySpace

During a time when the integrity of music is constantly in question, one band is determined to re-establish what was once the staple in artistic freedom. The world is fragile and becoming more volatile with each moment. With this reality on the minds and in the hearts of many of us, the alternative message that Advanced Placement provides is essential in today's music industry.

Advanced Placement began as a spin-off project from the now well known Bottom Brick collaborative. Dedicated members, Adjust; an aggressive, driven emcee, and Product; an educated and seasoned DJ, put their talents together to form a new style of Hip-Hop. With their first release came the well received mixtape, "Where Do We Sign!??!". The streets of Columbus, Ohio were buzzing with anticipation for their full length project. Now, with the city waiting and the industry pleading for originality, A.P. is poised to release their debut album. As a two man crew, Adjust and Product stand tall, strong and conditioned. They are here to provide promise for the artists again. The day has come for the carbon copy musicians and bands to step down and concede. It's time for the change that people have been searching for. It's time for Advanced Placement.

Bottom Brick - The Groundbreaking

MySpace

With the perpetual decline of consciousness in the music industry today, Bottom Brick stands as a Hip Hop crew willing to push for a change. The world of Hip Hop and its creative spirit is being overshadowed by a mundane, uninspiring blend of bland music. Bottom Brick hopes to emerge from behind that shadow and regain a sense of integrity that once was the appeal to so many musicians and fans alike.

Formed in early 2006, the three-member crew merged together after years of independent solo careers. With many of the same musical influences, ranging from Hip-Hop to Classic Rock, the band members grew extremely close in an abridged amount of time. Their vast musical abilities extend anywhere from turntablism and production to emceeing and engineering. In addition to managing themselves, Bottom Brick handles all of their own promotion. They also create their own artwork as well as record, mix and master all their albums in their own studio dubbed, “The Brick House”. With all of this group’s attributes and separate skills, these three musicians embrace the fact they can rely on themselves to bring their passion to the music business.

In an industry constantly changing and evolving, here is a crew who offers some consistency in an otherwise chaotic existence. The simplicity of their message is proof of their worth. At a time when originality is becoming increasingly scarcer, the idea of “relaying the foundation” lifts Bottom Brick up into a class of their own.

D.Black - The Return (Prod. by Jake One)

Seattle emcee D.Black returns with the track "The Return" from his forthcoming album, Ali'Yah. Produced by the renowned Jake One, "The Return" is a proclamation of a track, announcing the impending, D.Black-assisted return of real hip-hop. D.Black also believes "The Return" is a more complex challenge, "There's a lot of boasting and glorifying negativity in rap these days. I kind of wanted to boast the positive things, the "sport" that life has to offer. I think that even in a song like 'The Return', where I challenge others to reassess their rap content, it also challenges the listener to think about the trashy music they're listening to. The goal is to make it hurt you deep if your on the wrong side of the sword." A hybrid of hip-hop styles backs up D.Black's argument, as Jake One mixes a ?uestlove-like ultra-laid back drumbeat, large string sections, fine guitar licks, and a little Jay-Z sample for added flavor. Be sure to check out "The Return" and the rest of Ali'Yah when it drops September 15th on Sportn' Life Records/MYX Music Label.

iCON the Mic King feat. Awar - Fall From Grace (Music Video)

iCON the Mic King returns to film with the release of his second video from his latest project, Headphone Classics. The music video for the track "Fall From Grace" begins with a violent iCON armed at a murder scene, setting the tone for the rest of the video. Guest emcee Awar, who was also featured in the first track and video from Headphone Classics, joins in on the action with his own dose of getaways, gunshots, and aggressive rhymes. iCON looks to bring all the metaphors of the track to life, highlighted by his 'fall from grace' depicted by his suicide. The video wraps up with the murderous Mic King leaving his calling card: a king of clubs. Look for more of iCON's material in the Headphone Classics series.

Duck Down Records Signs With Blue Scholars

MySpace

Walking away from numerous record label offers, Blue Scholars will release several upcoming projects through a unique partnership formed with Duck Down Records, and Seattle’s Caffe Vita Coffee Co.

On August 25, 2009 Blue Scholars will release “OOF!” their newest collaborative multi-media project and the first release to be distributed through their new venture. On September 1st, they will re-issue their 2007 album “Bayani”, which has already sold over 20,000 units. “Bayani Redux” will include one brand new track and two songs that were previously available only via digital retail outlets. There will also be a brand new full-length Blue Scholars album and other projects coming soon.

The sales and distribution model developed by the group for their upcoming releases will allow them to maintain complete ownership of their music and total control over how it is marketed, sold, and even given away.

Instead of signing a standard artist/record label deal, Blue Scholars hired the label Duck Down to run point on marketing for all of their upcoming releases. As a major player in the current and ever-changing record label industry, Duck Down Records saw this deal as an opportunity to get creative and experiment with strategies for record labels to continue evolving as viable businesses.

Dru Ha, CEO of Duck Down Records states, “I believe Blue Scholars is positioned to be one of the next important groups, not just in hip hop, but in music worldwide, and I want Duck Down to be a part of that. They bring their progressive ideas not just to their music and lyrics, but also in the way they think about and do their business.”

Duck Down’s current distribution partner, E1 Entertainment, the largest independent distributor in the United States, will handle distribution of Blue Scholars’ physical product. Digital sales and distribution will go through Tunecore. Direct-to-fan marketing and sales will be developed by the members of Blue Scholars themselves, using Topspin web marketing tools.

Says Geo, of Blue Scholars, “After weighing all the options, remaining independent is without question, the best look. Duck Down shares that vision and their track record speaks for itself. With them, we get that national and international push while still owning and controlling our music. "

To finance all the upcoming projects, Blue Scholars have formed a strategic brand relationship with Seattle independent coffee company, Caffe Vita. The coffee company will also play a role in the sales and distribution plan by selling upcoming albums in all of their retail outlets and marketing the releases via their online presence.

Blue Scholars DJ/ Producer Sabzi says in regard to their partnership with Caffe Vita - “their innovative marketing, their justice and equity in business practices, and their premiere quality of product and presentation, make Caffe Vita an ideal brand to partner with. I intend to do with our music what Vita does with their coffee.”

"Coffee is both International and local, it effects the lives of millions, and it has tremendous ability to generate culture. We believe strongly in the work of the Blue Scholars and their power to look beyond the basic commodity that music has become. We are honored that Sabzi and Geo see that Vita is striving for the same goals." Mike McConnell, founder Caffe Vita

Blue Scholars have sold over 60,000 albums and played over 400 live shows. They have developed a dedicated following in the Northwest (selling over 4,000 tickets for each of their last few Seattle performances) and have shared the stage with an impressive list of nationally acclaimed artists such as Kanye West, Q-Tip, De La Soul, Immortal Technique, Hieroglyphics, GZA of Wu-Tang Clan, Matisyahu, Zion-I, Flobots and the Coup.

A partnership forged through the love of dope underground hip-hop, the duo finally has put forward their debut street album "War Of The Words" that is being released for free digital download on Foresight Records. Recorded mostly in M-Hott's apartment basement and a studio apartment in south Denver the frequent collaborators take pride in the raw and dusty sound that comprises their music and the process that was recording it. Now as they release what is sure to be one of the many LP's they drop together over time, the two are proud to give the many fans and seekers of "genocide free music" a project that is un-scathed by the corporate world's massive reach and unapologetic in it's brutal honesty about the current state of Hip-Hop music, urban entertainment as a whole and dedicated to the true esthetic of great Hip-Hop music.

Babu The Dilated Junkie Presents: Duck Season Vol. 2

While autumn may be the most wonderful time of the year for hunters, Babu's ongoing Duck Season series makes it excellent as well for beat-digging fans. This second volume balances quite a few Babu-produced breaks for friends and fam (Talib Kweli, Phil da Agony, Defari, and his Dilated Peoples bandmates) with up-to-the-minute shots from the hottest producers in street-level rap (Madlib, DJ Premier, Evidence). The mix gets harder and darker during the first half, reaching a horrorcore peak with an '80s-B-movie production by Alchemist on 1st Infantry's "Serious (The New Message)." From there, Babu pulls back with some soul sauce courtesy of some prime West Coast talent: a remixed DP joint ("Behold My Life"), Planet Asia's "Right or Wrong," and a soundclash with Stones Throw affiliates Medaphoar, Oh No, and Wildchild on "Time to Rep." Near the end, Babu has some fun scratching on tracks from two classic artists: Gang Starr ("Deadly Habitz") and KRS-One ("Underground").

Dub MD Presents: Junclassic - Southside's Savior

MySpace: Dub MD
MySpace: Junclassic

Dub MD and Junclassic are proud to present "Southside's Savior", a mixtape comprised of 22 tracks and nearly 80 minutes of music. Yes, Southside's Savior will fill an entire CD-R! Great for long drives and romantic hood barbeques! and maybe even a midnight bar brawl depending on the track selection and part of town you in.

Abstract Mindstate - Chicago's Hardest Working Vol. 1

MySpace

After a series of white label (12inch) releases, an independent ep release, a national release (through a bad record deal) and a highly anticipated unreleased album, Abstract Mindstate still stands as Chicago’s hardest working rhyme duo. Internationally known and heralded by the music industries most recognized and respected publications (hardcopy & online) the male/female emcee team of E.P Da Hellcat aka The White Lotis and Olskool Ice-Gre aka Tha Gud Dr. created a legacy as Chicago’s purveyors of golden era Hip Hop. Also referred to as the Wonder Twins this Westside/Southside collabo held the city down effortlessly, commanding attention from both coasts as well as the south. Abstract Mindstate feels it’s their duty as artist to create thought-provoking music. The group believes the commercial success of Hip Hop has given the extremely untalented and uncreative room to latch on to the art and use it for their own personal gain with no regard for the culture. Abstract Mindstate is about artistic integrity and respect for the culture which is why the group is still considered one of the best live performance Hip Hop acts to emerge from Chicago’s music scene. Their 3 part mixtape series aptly titled; Chicago’s Hardest Working Mixtape Vol.1, 2 & 3 is a testament to the time and energy the duo has put into making sure Chicago’s contribution to Hip Hop is properly represented. The group is humbled by the love and respect the city has given them over the years but it’s really good when the music industry as a whole appreciates and respects the level of quality Hip Hop they have created.

Evidence Signs With Rhymesayers

Grammy winning rapper and producer Michael "Evidence" Perretta signs multi album deal with Indie powerhouse Rhymesayers Entertainment. As one-third of the venerable Los Angeles Hip Hop staple Dilated Peoples, Evidence has spent the better part of his decade plus in the game, touring the globe and collectively selling well over 700,000 units. In addition to his Dilated work, Evidence has produced tracks for the Beastie Boys, Linkin Park, Defari, Planet Asia and more, including co-production on Kanye West's debut The College Dropout.

In 2007, Evidence set out to solidify his solo career with the release of the critically acclaimed The Weatherman LP. Followed up by 2008's The Layover EP and over 200 shows, Evidence has spent the last couple of years building a foundation of supporters, fan by fan. With this momentum Evidence knew he needed a team that could match his current pace and energy. When asked about his choice of partnering up with Rhymesayers Evidence explained, "This is the most natural move I could have made to further the evolution of my career, while maintaining my identity and passion for the music. Rhymesayers has a proven track record of being focused and dedicated to their artists and I'm excited to be a part of that."

Evidence will be touring this Fall as direct support on Brother Ali's Fresh Air Tour while putting the finishing touches on his Rhymesayers debut Cats & Dogs slotted for release early 2010.

Skyhie & Destruct - Warheads (Video)

Make sure you cop the album "Warheads", I'd say it's one of the illest albums released so far this year. Destruct is mad nice on the mic for a young man (I think 22) and the beats... well they're off the chain, dunno much bout Skyhie but this album should def get him some recognition, his beats here are sublime to say the least. You can cop the album (via paypal) from his myspace page, not sure if any stores sell it yet. You NEED to pick this up, this is FILI's top recommendation for this year, ya heard!!!

Listen to a cut from the album which I thought would get ya hungry for this album... cover and tracklist below also.

This is just a little introduction into the group as they spit flames over well known beats and some brand new ones to. Other production credits on the mix are Vanderslice & Hitfarmers! I need to hear more of the MC's as i can't really say whether they good or not but the new beats by JbL are crack, just listen to this one below... enjoy!
